Betta have my money! Two of the members from the 1973 trio known as Sly, Slick and Wicked as suing Universal Music Group over Justin Timberake’s hit “Suit & Tie” featuring Jay-Z. The track was produced by Timbaland and hit the number 3 spot on the Billboard 100 in 2013. The trio is now suing due to an unauthorized sample used in “Suit & Tie” from their song “Sho Nuff”.
Reports say Universal did pay paid to clear the sample but according to the group members, they never secured “the rights to the vocal performances” of “Sho Nuff.” That can make all the difference in the plaintiff’s wallet being that the single sold 3 million copies.
But it doesn’t stop at vocal performances, members of Sly, Slick and Wicked are also bringing up the song’s commercial use such as Bud Light’s and feel they deserve a cut.
It’s tough out here!
Take a listen to Sly, Slick and Wicked’s “Sho Nuff“.
