Timbaland On ASCAP “I Create Music” Expo

Travel issues prevented Timbaland from appearing in person for his keynote interview at the ASCAP “I Create Music” Expo (April 29). But the in-demand producer did the next best thing: appearing via live feed from Miami. And erasing attendees’ disappointment, The Emperor of Sound (the title of his new book] presided over a rollicking session that was part-tutorial, part-The Voice -- and thoroughly entertaining.

Timbaland addressed everything from his start in music and collaborating with Justin Timberlake to overseeing the music for the hot series Empire (whose latest soundtrack was released that day) to scoring original music for -- and the status of -- his own album Opera Noir. (He’s up to six songs that aren’t fully completed.) At the producer’s request, several questioners launched into impromptu singing auditions that won the audience’s attention -- and Timbaland’s (colleagues with him in Miami whipped out their phones to capture the performances).

As an animated Timbaland noted halfway through the session, “Right now, I’m loving making music again.” Among the additional insights the award-winning producer related during the late afternoon session:

Having a signature sound without being redundant:

"I use different rhythms. My brain moves faster than my body. I have all these concepts in my head that I’m constantly hearing; I hear rhythm in [people] talking. My mom told me that nobody can copy what God gave you."

The importance of building the right team behind you:

"You need a team. It’s your talent but you need the right people around you to orchestrate your talent. It starts with having a key person who believes in you more than you do; who sees beyond what you see. And that one person orchestrates who else comes along with additional expertise to help further guide you. When you have the right people, you can go hard. It’s all about God, teamwork and timing. My time and God’s time are different. I had to learn the hard way that tomorrow for me might be five years later."

The secret behind his 20 years-and-counting career longevity:

"It feels like I’m just getting started, so I don’t know. What I couldn’t do [yet] in 20 years … the world has no idea what’s about to happen."

Describing the creative synergy between him and Timberlake:

"We both honestly love music: we don’t do it for the money but to better ourselves. It’s something you’ve got to see; I can’t describe it. You just know it’s crazy when we get in the studio. He gives me power and I give him power. It’s almost like going to therapy -- getting stuff out to renew yourself."

His success with Empire:

"[Series co-creator] Lee Daniels had an idea, I believed in the idea and we clicked. The beauty of it: this was new for him and new for me; we’re growing together. It’s been a blessing and a cool challenge -- I’ve got a couple of more shows coming out. BetweenEmpire and the NBA, I’m now getting to do what I’ve always wanted to do".

Nelly Furtado Feat Timbaland - Promiscuous (10 Years Anniversary)

Back In 2006, Here is what was significant about "Promiscuous:"

"Promiscuous" is a song by Canadian singer Nelly Furtado from her third studio album Loose (2006), featuring Timbaland. The song was written by Timothy "Attitude" Clayton, along with Tim Mosley, Furtado and Nate "Danja" Hills. The song's lyrics, which were penned by Furtado and Clayton, feature a conversation between a man and woman who call each other promiscuous. The overtly-sexual song was released as the lead single from the album in North America in early 2006, and as the second single elsewhere in mid-2006 except in Latin America, where the single was released as the third single in late 2006.

Explicit Lyrics - The lyrics of "Promiscuous" describe the two sides of the relationship that the song's protagonist deals with. It was one of the first songs Furtado wrote with labelmate Timothy "Attitude" Clayton. Furtado called their teamwork something she "had never done before" because she saw the writing process as "extremely freeing" because of his different approach and style. Clayton helped Furtado experiment with interpreting the "promiscuous girl" character and the two-sided relationship she is in. Furtado also described that in the process of writing lyrics "we were actually flirting, which is why the song is so playful" and that she and Clayton nicknamed the song 'TheBlackBerry Song', because everything we say in the song you could text-message to somebody".^[2] Because of the preponderant musical influence of artists such as Talking Heads,Blondie, Madonna, The Police and Eurythmics, whom producers Timbaland and Danja listened to during the writing of the album, "Promiscuous" takes inspiration from pop music of the 1980s.

In United States, "Promiscuous" On 8 July it topped the Billboard Hot 100, becoming her first number-one single. It spent 6 weeks at the top spot and was replaced by Fergie's "London Bridge". It reached the top position on Billboard Pop Songs and Hot Dance Club Play chart. "Promiscuous" reached number twenty-two on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and number thirty-six on Hot Latin Songs chart. The song was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for sales of 1,000,000 digital copies. It also made number three on the Billboard Hot 100 year-end chart and number forty-four on the decade-end chart. As of August 2009, the song has so far sold over 2,504,000 digital downloads in the United States.

DANJA: "I had a beat playing. Tim walked in and said what came to him. he started doing the hook and added some drums. A lot of stuff we would start together, some he would start on his own and some I would start on my own. Then we'd come together and finalize it.
"The funny thing about 'Promiscuous' is he had that record done before we started on Nelly, though he might have had her in mind for it when we made it. I don't remember if she was 100 percent feeling it or not. It was one of those, 'I like it but we're still getting ideas out.' In the end, that was the last song we completed for the album. It ended up being the biggest song on the album."

Music Video - The song's Music Video was directed by Little X and features cameo appearances by Keri Hilson, Bria Myles, Sean Faris and Justin Timberlake. It does not follow a storyline and per Furtado's request, focuses on scenes with dancing and flirting because she wanted to recreate the song's indicative vibe, and took the opportunity to film a club video for the first time. Furtado said of the video, "It's that whole dance that goes on. There's that mystery there, the fun, playful sexiness, the verbal Ping-Pong game". Furtado and Timbaland cannot decide whether they want to begin dating or instead flirt with others on the dance floor. Their single performances are intercut with several scenes of a dancing crowd, and the lighting changes between blue, green, red, and yellow colors.

"Promiscuous" premiered on MTV's Total Request Live on 3 May 2006, where it reached number one after spending twenty-one days on the countdown. After its debut onMuchMusic's Countdown, it ascended to number one for the week of 28 July 2006. At the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, it was nominated for the Best Dance, Female and Pop Video Awards. The video was parodied by MADtv in a segment entitled "Syphilis Girl"; in the video, Furtado (Nicole Parker) is comically portrayed as having given Timbaland (Jordan Peele) the sexually transmitted disease, as well as on YouTube by the comedic group Train of Thought Sketch Comedy, where the video is parodied by troupe member Kaci and features a puppet version of Timbaland.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, January 16 1979 of African and Oneidan royal heritage. Her name is derived from Arabic ‘Ali’ and Jewish name ‘Aliya’, which means in hebrew ‘highest, the most exalted one, the best’. She is certainly all that.

Her lyrical style is often described as ‘Street and Sweet’. This is something she herself said in her song ‘Back & Forth’ where she has a line describing herself “”I got jazz personality. G mentality!”. Her lyrical content was often dark, matters of the heart while the songs were uptempo as a contrast. Her legacy for the whole r’n’b and hiphop scene was that the scene was now ready for a more futuristic production style that started to emerge in the early 00’s.

Her death on August 25, 2001 was tragic and early. Aaliyah had thoughts a month before her death that something bad was about to happen to her. “Someone’s following me and I don’t know why. I’m scared. Then suddenly I lift off. Far away. As if I’m swimming in the air. Nobody can reach me. Nobody can touch me”.

Back In 2006, Here is what was significant about "Sexyback:"

New Sound - Unlike the clean blend of R&B and pop that Timberlake used on hisJustified, the FutureSex/LoveSounds album had a harder, dirtier sound. "SexyBack" is the dirtiest of the songs on the album. The bass is heavy. The vocals are distorted. JT doesn't sing in falsetto. The punchy riff is like electropop mixed with rock. In interviews, JT describe his new sound as "club funk," a mix of funk, pop, New Wave and rock. [1] He filtered the influences of Prince, David Bowie, David Byrne and James Brown into one place, and it worked.

2. Sexy - "Sexyback" was JT's statement that he is sex symbol rather than a pop heartthrob. With lyrics like "You see these shackles? Baby I'm your slave." and "I'll let you whip me if I misbehave," there's no mistaking this is a sex song, not a love song. This was deliberate. Timberlake felt that radio music had gotten bland and was lacking in anything remotely sexy. Hence the opening lyrics, "I'm bringing sexy back"

3. Explicit Lyrics - This was Justin's first single to have a Parental Advisory sticker. It wasn't just for the talk of whips and chains. There are curse words in the song. Though the words were edited for the radio, he does say "I'm bringing sexy back/ The mother f**kers don't know how to act," and "You mother fuckers watch how I attack." For a non-rap song designed to be played on pop radio stations, this was very unusual.

4. Refocus - After Justin Timberlake released Justified, he was experiencing major burnout with music. This is a part of the reason why he began acting in movies likeAlpha Dog, Edison Force, and Black Snake Moan. His motivation to return to music was to make something that sounded different from the pop/R&B music he had already done. After meeting with Timbaland, he found a producer/partner who could help him steer his career in a new direction. The new song and album allowed JT to reinvent himself and regain focus on his music career.

DANJA: "For 'SexyBack' We were vibing in the studio. The way those sessions went, we jumped right in. The first record we did was 'What Goes Around Comes Around' and then we hopped into another idea. Me and Timbaland were jamming in the studio and Justin was there. We were recording while we were busting riffs, melodies, and beat patterns.

"There was maybe 45 minutes to two hours of us just jamming and they turned into songs like 'SexyBack,' 'Summer Love,' 'Sexy Ladies,' and another track. We went back, fine-tuned them, and make them songs. Everything we did in those sessions ended up on the album except for one song. Everything else, we made it on the spot and ended up on the project. There was no leftover songs from theFutureSex/LoveSounds sessions except for maybe one."

Though all of this is was a major departure for Justin Timberlake in 2006, I can't quite call it a major revolution for pop music. In fact, this track wasn't even a revelation for 2006. One month before "SexyBack" was released, Nelly Furtado released "Promiscuous," the lead single from her third album, Loose. Like "Sexyback," her song was:

Produced by Timbaland and Danja, and featured Timbaland as a guest vocalist. Like FutureSex/LoveSounds, her entire album was produced by Timbaland.
A new sound. It was a departure from her usual blend of pop, bossa nova, hip-hop and rock. "Promiscuous," like "SexyBack," it was dance song.
Sexy. I mean, the song is about two people flirtatiously talking about sex.
Had risque lyrics: Promiscuous doesn't have curse words, but the lyrics were very racy for the radio.
